REPLICATION vs DUPLICATION: What is the difference?

REPLICATION

This is an injected molded manufacturing process in which your CD’s or DVD’s are professionally manufacturing from raw plastic granules, which are melted down and molded into the shape of the disc. Your content is “STAMPED” or “PRESSED” into the disc making EXACT duplicates of your master. This is the clear choice for retail quality, professionally packaged CD’s or DVD’s for those requiring 500 copies or more. Replication has many benefits, including accuracy, quality, quantity, and packaging. The larger the order the better the price break, and prices will vary. Artwork and other packaging requirements will also affect price. Turn around times are normally 7-10 days after we get all of the components of the project, but mainly depends on your printing and packaging needs.

DUPLICATION
Duplication is the standard process in which smaller quantities of CD’s or DVD's are duplicated, normally less than 500. Those with larger run CD’s might chose this method due to the quicker turn around time, however if turn around time is not an issue, costs may be cheaper using the replication process. Blank CD-R and DVD-R media is loaded into duplication machines which will burn your content into the disc using lasers. Your information is digitally extracted from your master source (usually a master CD-R or DVD-R) and transferred to the blank discs. Your information is typically verified against the master then accepted or rejected. With the advent, popularity, and reduced cost of writable media, it is now possible to offer the same level of services to customers that need smaller quantity orders as well as customers which need larger quantities. Note: DVD-R's may have playback compatiability issues. See below.

Is there any DIFFERENCE in the final product?

Replicated CD’s versus Duplicated CD’s have small differences, most of which common users can not tell the differences. CD duplication has several methods of printing your label. Inkjet printing, High quality photo realistic thermal printing or professional screenprinting as listed from the cheapest to the most expensive type of printing.

Replicated CD’s are normally screenprinted which is standard for the process or offset printed for a magazine quality printed label. DVD’s on the other hand has a BIG issue between the two final products. About 90% of DUPLICATED DVD-R’s will play in most DVD playback devices, meaning that approximated 10% of those discs will have some type of issue. REPLICATED DVD’s will eliminate most of those compatibility issues, however some due exist in very rare cases. In our opinion, if you are planning on selling your DVD’s to an end user, it may be safer to use the DVD replication process for your project. DVD-R Duplication is great for Inter-company use or where any possible playback issues will not have consequence.
